ASIST Course

Learn how to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide

Over 80,000 people throughout Australia have already undertaken the ASIST suicide intervention program. .

What is ASIST?

ASIST is a 2-day interactive workshop in Suicide First Aid, where participants learn how to recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide, how to understand and clarify the nature and extent of the risk, and how to respond in ways that help increase the person at risk’s immediate safety.

Who can benefit from attending the workshop?
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Colleagues and team mates
  • Health and social services practitioners

Virtually anyone aged 16 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, can become an ASIST-trained care-giver. Developed in 1983 and regularly updated to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, ASIST is now the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop.

Outcomes
  • Be able to apply the ASIST suicide intervention model
  • Be able to connect the at-risk person with further help and appropriate support resources
  • Be able to discuss suicide with a person at risk in a direct manner
  • Be able to build a collaborative approach to intervention focused on safe outcomes

In all States and Territories, ASIST is regularly adopted as part of the professional development of organisations’ workforces. Today, the widespread use of the ASIST program in communities across Australia is helping to promote a common language of assessment, risk management and referral across diverse organisational backgrounds.
