Worried about someone else – tips for starting a conversation
It can be hard trying to help someone who gambles, especially if they do not think they have a problem or do not want to stop. Many people find it difficult to talk to someone close to them about gambling issues because they often do not know what to say and it can be confronting.
A connecting statement can be a useful way to start a conversation. They are truthful statements about something positive between you and the other person. Connecting statements open the door to speaking about a concern by making you both feel connected and positive about your relationship. For example, “I really care about you and what happens to us and because of that I feel have to talk about what I’ve been noticing”.
Family members and friends of problem gamblers can also access the FREE counselling services for any problem related to gambling. Accessing the service might help you manage your own problems arising out of someone else’s gambling or help you to help a problem gambler seek their own assistance. More about Problem Gambling.
